Ascentia was founded by Kim Edwards.I am a scientist and lawyer with experience in consumer protection law, intellectual property law, compliance, research and analysis. I always wanted to be a scientist and I started my career as a research scientist and clinical scientist. I studied law while working in, and managing, a reproductive biology laboratory. I love the challenge of research, analysis and solving problems.
In law, I specialised in intellectual property, trade practices and consumer protection law. I was employed for over 10 years working for two boutique intellectual property law firms and a large national law firm. Much of my work involved protecting inventions and business reputation and value. I worked on litigation, licensing and trade mark prosecutions. I learnt the value of understanding the nature of my clients’ businesses and what they wanted and needed. I worked with a number of large Australian and International clients and helped them to protect their valuable innovations, inventions and other works as well as their brands and the trade marks that distinguished their businesses and products from those of their competitors. I also helped them to protect their valuable reputations. I established Ascentia Intellectual Asset Strategies a law firm specialising in intellectual property protection and management and later Ascentia Sustainability to focus on compliance with consumer protection and environmental laws and requirements. I studied a masters of environmental science to pursue my passion for the environment and sustainability. I am passionate about looking after the environment that sustains us and I believe that if we conduct our business in a way that nurtures the environment and people that our businesses will thrive. I can only make a small difference by following this philosophy with my business but I can make a bigger difference in helping other businesses to do the same. I love helping organisations go beyond doing what they have to do, to doing what is right for the wellbeing of people, the planet and their profits. I am a Member of the NSW Law Society, the GRC Institute and an Associate Member of the Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand. Pro Bono WorkKim is a member of:
Our Sustainability PracticesWe minimise the use of artificial light sources, favouring natural light, reduce stand by power use with our electronic equipment and purchase green power. We purchase recycled paper and paper from certified managed sources, though we try to limit printing in the office to what is absolutely necessary. We reuse and recycle as much as possible. Whenever reasonable we aim to support local, independent businesses. We support the following charities: World Animal Protection (formerly WSPA), Australian Bush Heritage and the Wilderness Society. Mission, Values and VisionI am a supporter of conscious capitalism, and strongly believe that individuals can make a difference and that businesses must lead the way. I find the principles of industrial ecology and the blue economy very appealing. I am a strong believer that we all need to take responsibility for our actions, and that includes our actions towards people and the planet. This does not mean that we should not be rewarded for our work and have success in business. This flows from doing the right thing. We make choices in business and in life and I believe that one of those choices is to act sustainably in a way that supports:
Each element sustains the others and should be valued. Our Vision is for a better world forged by responsible, successful companies. Our Mission is to help organisations to grow reputable, sustainable businesses, where people, animals and the environment are valued, protected and respected. Outside workI love good food and wine, travelling to remote places and getting out of the city and my life is ruled by my 2 dogs.
